New Scanners
There are three main types of scanners: Handheld, Sheet-fed and Flatbed. A typical usage of a Handheld scanner is to scan bar codes. Sheet-fed scanners may be a stand-alone device or part of a multifunction printer/copier. An MFP allows saving the scans to hard drive, making copies of the scans and sending the scans via fax. Flatbed scanners have a glass panel much like a copier, but are lighter and smaller. They usually do not have a printing option, but may include features that enable scanning slides and transparencies, a USB connector and software for scanning management.
For highest quality scanning, the most important feature to check is the scanner's maximum resolution. This should always be reduced when not needed, in order to minimize the size of the scanned files.
